Culture Shock-A difference of a gesture

Culture shock can be defined that when people are in a new environment for instance ,studying abroad or travelling abroad ,they may experience the different culture, custom,diet habit and geographic situation and so on . Of these, these may produce some positive or negative emotion to them expressed as being exciting, curious,frustrated or confused.

To everyboay when they have been a new place which is totally not familiar with his hometown, he must be experience the culture shock. Today I intend to decribe a culture shock on a gesture which I heard from my friend. One time my friend and his friends went to a local restaurant to have a dinner. Actually my friend told me that his friends and he had have a really dilicious traditional British food in that restaurant. However when they nearly finished their dinner , an embarressed things happened to them.My friend wanted to ask the waiter to give the bill to him after they almost finished their dinner. So he made a click gesture to the waiter and his orientation is that the gesture could attract the waiter's attention. However, as soon as the waiter saw this gesture ,he straightly went to the table of my friend's with anger and told my friend that he did not feel happy with that gesture. It is not polite in the UK. How awkward my friend felt. Finally they paid the bill as soon as possible , then they left the restaurant.

My friend comes from Taiwan. In his hometown this gesture is normal one which can use to call somebody. Whereas in Uk it becomes unpolite behavior and make people misunderstand each other. When he narrated the story,he also experessed his opinion.In the different country as distinguise of the culture, belief, custom make people have distinct recognition about the same thing,such as a pose and body language.So before we come to a new place or abroad ,it has better to us to learn some culture about where you will go. Of this it is easy to us to adjust ourselves to the new area and aviod to make mistake like that and it also can reduce the chance which you will violate the taboo.

In my opinion culture shock is a experience which you can not aviod .So accept it and enjoy every stage that you will experience. It will become your precious memories.

Prepare for presentation

After we were told what the final assessment is ,we have time to discuss and prepare for our presentation and report in our class every day. Today our group have begun to confer on our presentation about Agros . The members of our group -Alan, Cathy,Susan and I distributed our task. Alan will conduct aspect of 4ps, Cathy will do research of usp and target market, Susan will survey Branding and advertising and i will respond for analysis of SWOT for Agros. In today class we just shared a part of ideas of our own aspect and analyse the direction which is the best to research.

In the discussion, Alan and i debated whether Argos will succeed in taiwan. Alan consider that if Agors open their Market in taiwan, they will fail, however i insisted on that there will be some opportunity to run their business in taiwan. From Alan's opinion ,there are many competitors in e-commerce and retail indusry such as Yahoo and IKEA and catalogue purchasing will not be suitable for tanwan customers as different culture. However on my opinion, i think that if the purchaseing habits of taiwanese correspond to the following :1, E-commerce is popular in taiwan. 2,Taiwanese prefer to purchase the foreign brand 3,TaiBei is a modern city of high price of the earth 4, Agros is a successful brand in Uk and they have solid fincial support to compete with their opponents,and so on. They will have opportunities to set up their business in taiwan. We enjoyed in the argument and finally we agreed with that Argos will have the opportunity to open abroad market in Asia.

For us, this is a prime start for our presentation and we learn a lot from our debat. we all work hard for our research and perform effective work.

way of seeing

Last week , we saw the video at our class named "way of seeing "which was spoken by John Berger. It was quite difficult to understand competely as so many complicated and new words in it.

From the video we could understand that there are many similarities between oil painting and publicity such as same references , quanities, things and using same ideas and a lot of parts of oil painting are used by publicity as a symbol. However the fundamental between oil painting and publicity is different. Oil painting presents the owner's enjoyment of their position and real life. It demonstrates their own value and sense. But publicity as a hint idicates that the desire which we have not achieved and can get by money. Oil painting is fine art, nevertheless publicity is commercial product.

Publicity produce the glamour and we are all subconsciously affected and told that we can not affort without glamour. The content of publicity gradually become the life which we dream. Publicity explains the world in its own way and it forms its own philosophy system. Meanwhile objects are neutral and publicity pack in this way and it makes them become more close to us without any aggression and subconciouslizing our concept. As the abuse of using of celebrities and publicity of products contribut the content to caricature.

Although it is seems that the words on the magazine is conncet with the real word and it seems that the dream close to the fact, but in fact there is no any connected band betwen the two world.It merely fills the gap btween the two world.

Plagiarisian

Plagiarisian is a long-term issue happened on the students. Copying from other sources without references quote and owner's information can be called plagiarisian. As longman Dictionary (1995) define "to take words, ideas etc, from someone else's work and use them in your work, as if they were your own ideas" and this term comes from Latin"Plagiarisian- a kidnapper or literary thief "(Tom Mcarthur 1992)

There are two situations in plagiarism. Except intention to copy from others, some students might not be attempted to copying. Merely make mistake as" different academic tradition " ( Leki ,1992).

Billy Elliton

Last Saturday , my friend and i went to Victory Theatre to see the musical -Billy Elliton. Before i were going to see it , i knew that it adapted from the film of same name and it spoke a little boy who lived with his single father whom was a miner in the northwest of uk sought his dream of ballet.

When i was sitting in the thearte to see the musical, i were really moved and shaked by it. There were full of contraditions in it , such as studying ballet and studying box, employer and employee, father and son, workers who were on strick with the police and so forth. Especiall, in the musical there were two prime sences given me deep impression. One was the boy struggling in his heart when his father strictly forbade him to learn ballet and another was the boy dreamed him dancing to represent his desire. The former used the boy's dancing compared to the sounds of sticks beaten on the shields of polices. The pain in that boy's heart was discribed vividly. For me I was extremly deeply moved. Music gradually melted into the dance and these made the whole musical full of confliting with contraditions on the stage. I was ever worried about that it could not express completely by musical on the stage . As compared to the film which can display keen contradition confliting through cutting montage it seems that it is diffictult for musical to show the emotion of contradition on the stage. However Bill Elliton have done sucessfully. Billy who speaks with the strong accent of northwest of working class with ballet dream became a typical representation to go through these contraditions.

There are a tremendous team to support it for its success. The music was made by Elton John, the words of song were made by Lee Hall and the director is Stephen Daldry . These factors make this musical deserve watching.

For me, i could see Billy Eillton at last and it is one of the best musical i have been seen.

Seafood party

One of my flatmates named Fangfang will graduate from her MA course this month and she decided to hold a party to celebrate with her friends on Saturday . Fortunately all of her flatmates were invited. What her plan was that we would go to Billingsgate Market which is the biggest wholesale seafood market in London at 4:00 at first and then we would go back Will Wyatt Court where we live to cook them for ourselves. We were all excied for the fantastic party and prepared for the party the day before Saturday. In order to get up on time the next day, we all made FangFang a request to knock at our door to be woken up the next morning.

The next day FangFang and all of my flatmates got up on time and went to the Market to meet her friends except for me. I was so lazy that i could not get up on time. So i merely could wait for them back without doing anything. I regretd for this until now. As my absence i miss a prime time Which i could enjoy with my friends.

They came back about 8:30 and we cooked together. By a way i am not good at cooking food and most of time i only a assistant and a person who could make so much terrible mess. During the whole proccess of cooking the prime chiefs are the two boys who come to TaiWang and German respectively. It seemed like to make an exquisite art works when they was cooking. Finally as they worked so hard all kinds delicious seafoods were made by them such as lobsters and crabs and so forth.

What a amazing Saturday it was . We enjoyed to our's heart's content with various sorts of yummy seafood and white wine.

You are my teacher

Since i have been here to study in UAL. I experienced difference stages in my life. Now i really enjoy my life in here and i find that i have gotten many teachers around me. Especially every classmate of mine is my prime teacher and for me it seems like great treasure. The proverb in China,there is a teacher among three people who are walking together. You make me proud of you. I sincerely appreciate my teacher Mark who help us to build the blogger to write our diaries . Of this ,i can read everybody's article from their blogger and enjoy their writing. I also can benefit so much from them.

Impression of london

A friendly London: this impression was given by London when I just got here. In my memeory, the first day when i went to school my landlady who is a beautiful woman sent me to the tube station and helped me to buy the ticket .When i went into the station and confused the direction of school. A man who i did not know pointed the direction to me carefully and warmly.I still remembered his amiable smile. For a stranger ,that is how important it is . From these i suddenly felt that I was not alone in here.

A busy London: As if there were mere 4 hours per day in my class in the language center of my school, I could not really experience the busy life of london.However when i saw the people who was walking on the street with the hurried step , the quickly changing posters on the street and the wall of tube station and the cars driving in an endless stream. I regonized that i was in a big modern city like others even though it had so long history.

The heaven of the animals and birds: If you walk around London you will see pigeons everywhere. They fly freely and enjoy the delicious food which is fed by people with warm heart. Surprisely you can meet the cute squirrels and my friends told me that fortunately you can see foxs in the park or your garden which i have not met .

The dream place of art and artists: If you love art or if you are a artist with ambition London is a ideal dream place that you will never want to miss .There are so many galleries containted all kinds of art styles.Whatever which type of art you like and you do there will provide a wide stage to you and you can enjoy creating your works freely.

Paraphrase- Aim of education

Compare to teaching what to think,the goal of education more focuses on teaching how to think ,in order to enable us to think independently instead of remembering by rote.

We may hope that we can bulid active situations of learning which make for unqueness,for self-direction and self-initiated learning when we rate self-government and we are interrupted by the increasing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes.

Humankind has the unique capability to learn from others' experience.

For an educated person as me ,it is strange to constantly discuss so little pressure laying on the pleasure .To be educated can be caught up into the word of though.

I appreciate that i have not lost the originality for being never sent to school.

21st century the illiterate will be defined by those who can not learn, unlearn and relearn but not those who can not read and write.

Yesterday one friend of mine called me and told me that she had broke up with


her boyfriend for his betray. I could feel how sorrowful she is from her voice and i


could not do anything but consoling her. She cried on the side of the phone and


tried her best to destroied her memory about them. Love suddenly disappeared


and happiness also left. I felt sadness for this result at that moment. why not


keep the perfect memory between two people who ever loved each other. We both


know that there is no equality in love and we do not care about who expend


more. If when you fall in love you feel happiness and enjoyable, Everything


will deserve. Do not make oursleves become a person with full of complaints and


you will hurt deeply .



We ever loved and we were ever joyful .That is enough. We should thank for the


destiny that we could meet in our life. We can gain a precious recollection which


is as if the mellow wine that have made long time .One day when we are getting


old we would recall what we ever experienced together.



Whatever we ever loved , so do not complain each other.

For everybody, life seems a long journey and it seperates into different parts during our

whole life.

Everytime when we set out ,we possibably will experience all kinds situations

what we could not image.

Something are that we might love to meet ,however others are thatwe hope that we have never met.

Facing life we have no choice and we just can accept it and attempt to adapte ourself to the new situation. Try to make yourself peace as water.

Like water to tolerate everything and as water keep quiet and peaceful.

As Chinese idom said that there are millions rivers ,lakes and streams going through the sea.It is a simple sentence ,nevertheless it includes greatly wise knowledge about life.

Whatever we will meet ,we must keep a heart with being thankful and keep smile everyday.

If we all can keep our eyes on the merits of people and things, there will be less unhappy

what we will feel.

The world we live ought to become more harmonious. We will never fight , hurt and misunderstand each other.
